Office of Suicide Prevention Trainings

safeTALK—Suicide Alertness for Everyone

safeTALK is a community-oriented suicide alertness workshop which prepares anyone over the age of 15, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. This training allows for up to 40 participants and lasts 3-4 hours. After completion of safeTALK, participants will have the ability to recognize a person at risk for suicide and know how to connect them with a person trained in suicide intervention or similar resources to keep the individual safe.

ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)

ASIST is a two-day intensive, interactive, practice-dominated course designed to help caregivers recognize and review risk, and intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. It is by far the most widely used, acclaimed, and researched suicide intervention training workshop in the world.

Mental Health First Aid

Just as CPR teaches how to assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid teaches how to assist an adult experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis. In this 8 hour course, participants learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. The training provides the skills needed to reach out and provide initial help and support to an adult who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a 8-hour training designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including ADHD), and eating disorders.

Suicide Prevention 101, 2hr Training

The Suicide Prevention 101 Training Program, formerly known as Gatekeeper, focuses on four specific populations: Lifespan (general), Youth, Elderly and Native American. The program can be used in special training environments such as Law Enforcement and Foster Care Agencies. The objectives of this training are to increase one’s knowledge, understanding of suicide, recognize warning signs, identify risk and protective factors, increase willingness and ability to intervene with a person at risk for suicide. This training will provide insight for interacting with survivors and identify referral resources. We offer in-person and virtual (Zoom) versions of the Suicide Prevention 101 class.

Safe Messaging on Suicide, 3hr Training

The NOSP is pleased to provide improved education regarding Safe Messaging on Suicide. Studies and research have concluded that the way we talk about suicide can have long-lasting impacts on someone with lived experience with suicide. It is crucial for our communities to use consistent language to frame discussing or reporting on suicide. This will help prevent future suicides and to destigmatize the conversations surrounding.

• Facts and myths about suicide
• Suicide safe language and suicide safe imaging
• Person first language, the contagion factor
• How to safely report on suicide (TEMPOS)

Note the importance of the message messenger and postvention along with sharing resources with participants.

Suicide Prevention 101 Training

Suicide Prevention 101 (formerly known as 'Gatekeeper') is a 4 hour in-person training to certify trainers in delivering 2-hour SP101 classes to FSA staff and/or foster parents, utilizing foster care data. This training increases one's knowledge and understanding of suicide, to recognize warning signs, to identify risk and protective factors, and to increase willingness and ability to intervene with a person at risk for suicide. It will provide insight for interacting with foster youth and identify referral resources.

Most trainings are in-person and some can be virtual (TEAMS or ZOOM)
